How to install a carpet gripper edge

Step 1: Measure Accurately
In order to ensure the accuracy of your measurements and cut, you should take each measurement at least twice. Measure the location where your carpet gripper will be located. If the location is wide, you should have someone help you in order to ensure complete accuracy. When measuring the carpet gripper, make sure you make your cut marks on the bottom side. Doing this will ensure that if you don’t cut through and obliterate your mark, it will not show when installed.
Step 2: Cut the Carpet Gripper
Using the proper type of saw, make a very small mark in the underside of the carpet gripper where your mark is. Set the carpet gripper across the area being spanned and compare the location of your saw mark with that location. Adjust the location of your mark as necessary and make your cut very carefully so as not to split or otherwise damage your carpet gripper.
Step 3: Secure Carpet Gripper to Floor
Place the carpet gripper so that it sits on the floor against the material being transitioned to. Use the proper type of nails to secure it to the floor. You should use one nail for every four to eight inches. Make sure the angled tacks are pointed back towards the carpeted room so they will grip the carpet.
Step 4: Stretch and Cut the Carpet
Use the carpet stretcher to stretch the carpet up to where the transition is being used. Fold the carpet back upon itself so that it is flush with the edge of the carpet gripper against the other flooring material. Using the carpet or utility knife, cut the carpet one quarter of an inch from the edge of the carpet gripper.
Step 5: Lay Carpet in Carpet Gripper
Discard the cut off piece of carpet. Pull the edge of the carpet away from the carpet gripper. Apply a small bead of seam sealer against the edge of the carpet gripper. Fold the leading edge of the carpet into the carpet gripper and push the carpet into the gripper securely. Use a carpet tuck tool to make sure the carpet is properly tucked into the carpet gripper. Once the carpet is completely tucked, remove the spreader and clean up your tools.
When done properly, installing a carpet gripper or transition strip will give your carpet installation job that professionally finished look.
